Here are some custom-made occasion cakes that I have made for my family and friends.

Cream Cheese Flowers & Grass Birthday Cake |
I made this
Cream Cheese & Summer Berry Bundt Cake for my little girl's first birthday party. Is took hardly any time at all as I pre-bought the little flowers and only used 2 colours of icing. The buttercream icing was simply piped on in swirls and waves to look like grass. It's a fantastic recipe to be sure to give it a go.

Super Mario 3D World Cake |
Ok so I've cheated a little and used plastic character figures but the rest is all edible (except for a few skewers to stop it from toppling over)! I copied this cake design from a level on the world map in Super Mario 3D World. I used Victoria Sponge cake with strawberry jam, buttercream, wavy fondant strips for the "earth" effect and green fondant for the grass. The floating cloud is a biscuit covered in white fondant propped up with skewers, and the brick blocks and questions mark cubes are just solid sculpted fondant. I have added little pink flowers too. The cupcakes around the edge have rice paper power-up toppers which I got from Ebay.

Buttercream Dinosaur Birthday Cake |
This is just a simple Mary Berry Victoria Sponge recipe (3x the recipe) with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream. I used a dinosaur mold to bake the top layer, the bottom two layers were done in a large rectangular baking tray. I have decorated it with yummy buttercream using a star nozzle for the dinosaur, and a grass/hair nozzle for the base. The teeth and spikes are made with fondant.

Sarah and Duck "Bathtub" Cake |
To make this cake I used 4 layers of chocolate sponge (as on my
Salted Caramel Chocolate Cake Recipe), a standard chocolate buttercream, apricot glaze to keep the cake layers moist, chocolate "wooden planks" which I made simply by melting chocolate and spreading it onto a large sheet in a rippled effect, blue buttercream water, cream cheese icing for the bath bubbles which I piped on with a small round nozzle, then fondant for Sarah and Duck and the other decorations. I sprinkled a little edible glitter onto the bubbles to make them look sparkly.
 |
40th Birthday Tiered Cake |
I used my
Salted Caramel Chocolate cake recipe for this luxurious 40th Birthday cake, but added an extra 2/3 to the recipe for the top tier. I used a
chocolate number mould from Lakeland to make the numbers, then drizzled over melted chocolate for an "oozy effect". Decorated with raspberries for colour.
 |
Dime Bar Cake |
Here's a really simple way of decorating a decadent chocolate cake - with shards of dime bars and colourful candles. Simple but awesome.
 |
Raspberry & White Chocolate Cake |
To me, this is the kind of birthday cake I would want to receive. White chocolate ganache with white chocolate curls and fresh raspberries. Better than fondant any day.
Recipe here.

Blueberry Cream Cheese 1st Birthday Cake |
A lot of 1-year-old babies seem to love blueberries, this also seems to be a time when mummies let their babies taste cake for the first time. So what's better than a wholesome blueberry cake made with cream cheese icing. It's not too sweet and sickly for their tastebuds so this keeps mum happy. Recipe from The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook.

Blueberry Cream Cheese Pirate Cake |
Here's a way to make a pirate cake without using any fondant at all. I used crushed digestive biscuits to make the sand, a cream cheese icing, blueberries arranged to resemble waves, then I just printed some piratey pictures onto the card and attached to cocktail sticks. It tasted delicious and nothing artificial in sight.
